[...] Almost a year ago, at the beginning of the presidential campaign, I put forward an argument against the conventional wisdom that states “that the internet has not yet reached its peak of influence and probably won’t reach that peak before Nov. 2008, but maybe the during the cycle after that we will start to see the internet come into its own as the central medium for political discussion.” My argument was twofold: [...]

I totally agree with your point that the Internet is still going through its growing pains, I teach classes on Internet Legal Research every year and I often make a similar point when discussing HTML and various web protocols.

I would actually say that Web 2.0 is in its infancy, from the Pew Report: "Yet the proportion of adults who exploit the connectivity, the capacity for self expression, and the interactivity of modern information technology is a modest 8%."

The digital divide is a huge issue and there is a wide range between digital haves and have-nots. While most Americans know the Internet exists, they're not expert users, so the online constituencies for Obama and Paul camps are not necessarily large in absolute numbers, but since so few Americans vote, they may still be influential.

One other point, I think that television and the web will merge in the near future, especially is technologies like Microsoft's Surface computing platform gain favor. The news will become multimedia and will be webcast with embedded hyperlinks and access to other content.

If this is a manifesto did you give it the obligatory scribble down into a notebook (similar to the cocktail napkin for famous scientific formulae)? You probably should since you don't want to lose it if your hard drive dies.

The original draft of this manifesto was published in D&D, which you can find that here. There was a lot of good discussion in that thread, and I tried to clarify my approach in this article quite a bit, including the anthropomoriphization and apparent attribution of agency to the internet and my reasons for denying what I called the 'conventional wisdom'. I strongly recommend reading the thread.

Also, this is my first real 'manifesto', so any further suggestions, comments, or criticisms would be greatly appreciated.
